Last chance to visit historic New France exhibition Once in French America

Gatineau, Quebec, March 18, 2005 – The Canadian Museum of Civilization would like to remind the public that the exhibition Once in French America, celebrating the 400th anniversary of French settlement in North America, will close on March 28, 2005.

More than 150,000 visitors have already enjoyed Once in French America, which provides a sense of what life was like in New France when nearly two-thirds of North America was under the French Regime. The exhibition covers the people, the vast territory, the birth of new societies and the emergence of a culture that is still part of our heritage. On display are period furniture, paintings, ceramics, clothing, silver objects, religious ornaments, carvings, sculptures and much more.

Actors from Dramamuse, the Museum’s theatre troupe, portray characters from the period and bring history to life as they circulate through the exhibition.

“It is not likely that such a wide range of objects from the 17th and 18th centuries, from forty collections in North America and Europe, will be presented again in a single exhibition,” observes Victor Rabinovitch, President of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. “Our curators worked very hard to create an exhibition that illustrates the century and a half during which North America was largely French. At the same time, the exhibition shows how this French presence has become a part of our Canadian identity.”

This exhibition was produced by four Canadian Museum of Civilization curators and historians who made good use of their research in archaeology, material culture and history: chief exhibition curator Jean-Pierre Hardy in collaboration with Jean-Pierre Chrestien, John Willis and Jean-François Blanchette.

If you don’t want to miss this exceptional exhibition, be sure to visit Once in French America at the Canadian Museum of Civilization by its final day, March 28, 2005, when the Museum will be open for Easter Monday.
