Discover the Mystery Of The Nile
Down the world's greatest river

March 22, 2005 — Gatineau, Quebec — Starting April 1, the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX Theatre invites audiences to complete a full descent of the world’s greatest river with the new film, Mystery Of The Nile. Many explorers have tried to navigate the entire Nile, but all have failed. On Christmas Day, 2003, however, a team of explorers set out on an epic quest to become the first to travel the world’s longest river from source to sea. Mystery Of The Nile tells the story of this emotional and historic expedition with the dazzling immediacy of large-format photography, bringing the expedition’s bold voyage to life with unmistakable realism.

Audiences will feel like they are riding shotgun on the team’s 4.5-metre rafts as they crash through the rapids in Ethiopia’s remote desert canyons. They will feel the intense heat as the team traverses the desert plains of Sudan on their way to Khartoum, where the Blue Nile merges with the White Nile to form the Nile proper. They will witness the human struggle inherent in such an arduous journey and watch as the crew overcomes feelings of fear and frustration. More than just a chronicle of a groundbreaking expedition, Mystery Of The Nile also reveals a wondrous region that is host to abundant historical, cultural and natural treasures, where a connection to the ancient past informs our understanding of the rapidly changing future.

Producer and director Jordi Llompart says, "This film will truly surprise audiences, because it visits an area we see over and over on the news as a place of war, poverty, famine, suffering and danger. Yet this film brings an alternate, unexpected view of the region’s tremendous beauty, its rich historical achievement and a deeply felt connection between Westerners and the people of the Nile region."

Both a captivating human adventure and a serious in-depth look at this fascinating yet little-known region, Mystery Of The Nile promises another exciting giant-screen experience.

Mystery Of The Nile was produced by the creators of Everest, Dolphins and Coral Reef Adventure, which enjoyed great success at the IMAX Theatre. It will be presented on the IMAX Dome starting April 1, in addition to Vikings, which will be presented on the giant IMAX screen until July 2005.
