Victor Rabinovitch reappointed as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation

Gatineau, Quebec, April 5, 2005 — The reappointment of Dr. Victor Rabinovitch to a second five-year term as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation has been confirmed by the Government of Canada. The Corporation comprises the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum.

Ms. Claudette Roy, C.M., Chair of the Corporation’s Board of Trustees, expressed the Board’s pleasure that the government had accepted its recommendation for the re-appointment. “Under the leadership of Victor Rabinovitch, the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum have been transformed as vital Canadian cultural institutions,” said Ms. Roy. “In particular, the new Canadian War Museum, which will open on May 8, will be a rich legacy for all Canadians who value the human and social dimensions of our country’s history.”

Dr. Rabinovitch said the next five years will present great opportunities for identity and culture. “It is an honour to lead these national museums and their outstanding staff,” he said. “The new Canadian War Museum will now join the Museum of Civilization as a world-class institution. We will create initiatives with museums across the country and internationally, in research and in top quality exhibitions on Canadian and world subjects.”

From 1995 to 1998, Victor Rabinovitch served as Assistant Deputy Minister for Cultural Development and Heritage at the Department of Canadian Heritage, where he was responsible for policies and programs in broadcasting, cinema, publishing, sound recording, copyright, museums and performing arts. He also served as Assistant Deputy Minister of Income Security Programs, responsible for the administration of Canada’s public pensions.

Mr. Rabinovitch began his federal public service career in 1982 as Assistant Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. He holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from McGill University and a Doctorate from Sussex University, in England. His most recent article on cultural issues is entitled Museums Facing Trudeau’s Challenge: The Informal Teaching of History, published in Canadian Issues, October, 2003.
