2004 Clio Award for The Last Imaginary Place by Dr. Robert McGhee Gatineau, Quebec, May 31, 2005 — Dr. Robert McGhee’s The Last Imaginary Place: A Human History of the Arctic World has received the 2004 Clio award for northern Canadian history from the Canadian Historical Association. The book is not only a history of Arctic peoples, but also an exploration of the mythical Arctic that has developed through thousands of years of travellers’ tales, inevitably distorting our perspective of the polar world and its inhabitants. It is co-published by Key Porter Books and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
With The Last Imaginary Place, Dr. Robert McGhee draws links between history and archaeology, between studies of the Canadian North and broader developments in the circumpolar world, and between the presentation of academic research to scholarly and general audiences. Early human adaptation to the North, the rich and complex histories of Arctic peoples, and the story of polar exploration, are depicted with authority and sensitivity. The writing is accessible and compelling, making the book a valuable addition to any northern studies library.
Dr. Robert McGhee, who has dedicated his career to explaining the early human history of the Canadian North, is a Curator of Archaeology at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. His previous books include Canada Rediscovered, Ancient People of the Arctic, and The Arctic Voyages of Martin Frobisher: An Elizabethan Adventure.
