Grand Opening of the Canadian War Museum on Sunday, May 8 at 3:00 p.m.

The Opening Ceremony of the Canadian War Museum is for all Canadians who wish to celebrate the opening of this new national museum. The ceremony will take place in the park facing the Museum, rain or shine. Seating is reserved for veterans.

Prior to the Opening Ceremony, a SkyHawk will jump from a Griffon helicopter and land behind the stage. Around 3:00 p.m., a formation of CF-18s will fly over the Museum to mark the start of the ceremony, followed by the singing of the national anthem.

The Canadian War Museum Opening Ceremony will be carried out by the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Paul Martin.

Activities and Performances

Gregory Charles
The master of ceremonies will be the multitalented Gregory Charles. In 2004, he hosted the Gala of the Governor General of Canada on Radio-Canada, and in 2000 he was the host of Canada Day ceremonies on the CBC. Since 2001, he has also hosted the weekly radio show Des airs de toi on Radio-Canada, and has enjoyed tremendous success with his most recent one-man show Noir et blanc, for which he received the prize for best performance of the year at the ADISQ gala in October 2003.

Térez Montcalm
Audiences will be enchanted by Térez Montcalm's interpretations of jazz standards. Onstage, her vibrant energy captivates audiences of all ages, as does her unique and inimitable style, and her passion for music in all its forms.

Colin James and The Little Big Band
Colin James is a world-traveller. As one of Canada's best guitarists, he has sold over one million records worldwide, seen most of the world, won many industry awards, and enjoys international recognition both for his versatility as a guitarist and for his unforgettable voice. His diverse repertoire includes the blues/rock that got his career going, as well as big band and his first musical love: the blues. He was also host of the CBC documentary, The Blues Masters, which featured vintage footage of Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.

The Ottawa-Carleton Catholic School Board Chamber Choir
This youth choir has sung at a wide range of local events, including the CHEO Telethon, the opening of the Catholic Education Centre Museum, and the 60th Anniversary Celebration of D Day, to name but a few. They have also travelled to Moncton in a musical exchange with Les Petits Chanteurs d'Acadie and participate annually in the Kiwanis Festival. With the Board Children's Choir, they have released two CDs: Light of the World and Shine.

Avro Lancaster
In addition to the day's musical guests, an Avro Lancaster will fly over the CWM site at the end of the ceremony. The Lancaster was the most outstanding heavy bomber of the Second World War. Of the 7,366 Lancasters built during the Second World War, this Avro Lancaster is the only flying aircraft of its type in North America, and one of only two in the world.

The Museum will be open for the public to visit from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free.
