The Canadian War Museum invites families to The Studio

Ottawa, Ontario, May 24, 2005 — The Canadian War Museum invites families to participate in an art program offered in The Studio located in Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae Gallery.

These programs are organized in conjunction with the temporary exhibition Art and War: Australia, Britain, and Canada in the Second World War, presented until September 25, 2005. For the first time ever, Second World War art treasures from three of the world's largest military history museums — the Australian War Memorial, the Canadian War Museum and the Imperial War Museum — will be presented in an international exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

This joint exhibition explores how Canadian, Australian and British painters represented the conflict as it was happening. A compelling exhibition, featuring never before seen works, Art and War explores the conflict from an individual, emotional and profoundly human viewpoint.

These art programs are offered every weekend during the months of May, June and September and every day during the months of July and August. Themes explored are:

If you were the war artist?: Children are presented with three black and white laminated photos of events of the Second World War. The challenge is then to create a work of art from one of these photos using a variety of techniques.

Paint the word: Children are challenged to choose one word from a suggested list and to create a painting or other work of art based on the word. What colour is pride? What texture is anger?

What’s my story?: Starting either from a portrait or face cut out from its painting, children are asked to fill in the person’s story.

These programs are held during operating hours from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in The Studio located in the Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae Gallery. Activities are free with regular admission fees to the Museum.
