Experience living history, Roman-style, at the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Gatineau, Quebec, August 2, 2005 — A great weekend of fun awaits the whole family during the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s Roman Days, August 6 and 7, 2005, organized in conjunction with the exhibition POMPEII. Find out what life was like for soldiers in the legions of Ancient Rome as historical re-enactors demonstrate activities at a Roman military encampment on the grounds of the Museum. Costumed Roman soldiers will perform military manoeuvres, a “pilum charge” and games, amidst legionnaires’ tents, shields, spears, flags, helmets, and a Roman chariot. “Rustius Norticus,” a Roman craftsman, will explain how he outfits the soldiers with the equipment he makes, including chain-mail objects, hobnail sandals and leather jewellery. All roads lead to Rome!

The Canadian Museum of Civilization’s (CMC) major summer exhibition, POMPEII, showcases over 500 original artifacts recovered from the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii and surrounding areas. The CMC is the only Canadian venue in which the exhibition will be presented. Feel the intensity of the inhabitants’ last moments as they fled the fury of Mt. Vesuvius. Over 700,000 Europeans have visited the exhibition since it first opened in March 2003. This must-see exhibition closes on September 12, 2005. Don’t mist POMPEII; there are only 6 weeks left!

Please note: There is a charge of $5.00, in addition to regular Museum admission to visit POMPEII (not applicable to children and members). Advance purchase is recommended; timed ticketing is in effect.

Museum admission is free every Thursday after 4:00 p.m. and is half-price on Sundays.
