World-renowned Canadian architect Moshe Safdie to speak at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Gatineau, Quebec, August 2, 2005 — During Expo ’67, daring and innovative architect Moshe Safdie’s first introduced his vision to provide “for everyone a garden,” an idea he created with the quirky and modern Habitat ’67 in Montreal. This vision is still central to his work, even now in the Israeli city of Modi’in. The Canadian Museum of Civilization, in partnership with Carleton University, is proud to present a lecture by world-renowned Israeli-Canadian architect and urban designer Moshe Safdie, Companion of the Order of Canada. The lecture is in conjunction with the Cool ’60s Design exhibition presented until November 27.

Born in Haifa, Israel in 1938, Moshe Safdie moved to Montreal to study architecture at McGill University. His Master’s thesis became the infamous Habitat ’67, the central feature of the 1967 World’s Fair. Three years later, Mr. Safdie became very involved with the rebuilding of his homeland in Jerusalem. He later taught at the universities of Yale, McGill and Ben-Gurion; designed six of Canada's principal public institutions, including the Musée de la civilisation, in Quebec city, and the National Gallery of Canada. More recently, he designed Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport. His current projects include the Federal Building in Washington, D.C.; work with developing countries like Senegal and Iran; and the ongoing rebuilding of Jerusalem. Mr. Safdie is a published author; his upcoming theoretical work discusses the architecture of humanity in the age of mega-scale.
