New virtual exhibition focuses on the architecture of old Hull

Gatineau, Quebec, October 12, 2005 — A new virtual exhibition officially launched today features the architectural heritage of old Hull, and shows how the face of the oldest neighbourhood in Gatineau has changed over the years.

The result of a joint initiative of the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Ville de Gatineau, the virtual exhibition Remember When…? My Encounter with the Architecture of Old Hull is a fascinating journey through time. Sixty photos show the houses, businesses, factories, public buildings and churches that attest to the variety of styles and the mix of old and new that is distinct to old Hull’s architecture.

On a district map, ‘virtual’ visitors can easily navigate from one street to another by clicking on the arrows that indicate the location of the buildings photographed. The exhibition uses archival photographs to juxtapose past and present, showing the dramatic changes that altered old Hull’s streetscape during the twentieth century. The exhibition also gives a detailed history of the buildings and the people who lived in them.

“The rich architectural heritage of old Hull is definitely worth preserving,” said Victor Rabinovitch, CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. “We are very pleased to participate in the virtual preservation of the historical buildings that have been conserved in the neighbourhood that is also home to the Museum.”

Gatineau Mayor, Yves Ducharme, is thrilled about the city’s partnership with the Museum. “In addition to presenting the rich past of a sector of our city to wider audiences, this virtual exhibition will allow the population of Gatineau to discover the architecture that characterizes the city in an interesting and fun format,” he said. “The prestige and international reputation of the Canadian Museum of Civilization will contribute to the discovery of Gatineau by an international clientele. This is yet another initiative that proves how proud the Museum is to be part of our city. Long live this admirable partnership!”

Remember When…? has been made possible thanks to an initiative by Harry Foster, a former photographer for the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Foster, who took a personal interest in the architecture of old Hull, took the photos and was the project leader. Michelle Guitard, a history consultant, was also closely involved. She researched the history of buildings and wrote most of the historical content related to the photos.
