Celebrate the harvest at the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Gatineau, Quebec), October 17, 2005 — On October 23, take part in the harvest celebrations at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Attend a traditional performance by the Mohawk Singers and Dancers, from Kanawake, Quebec, known as: "Les gardiens de la porte de l'Est". You can also play traditional games, sample harvest foods and take part in gardening and cornhusk workshops.

Traditionally, the Iroquois held six seasonal festivals each year. One of these was the Harvest Festival, usually held in October and often coinciding with the full moon. The traditional celebration lasted a few days and typically involved dancing, signing, playing and feasting. As its name suggests, the Harvest Festival was held during the harvest when the community came together to thank and celebrate the many gifts Mother Earth generously provided: corn, beans and squash.
