Exhibition A Caring Profession takes centre stageWomen’s History Month at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Gatineau, Quebec, October 20, 2005 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization’s exhibition A Caring Profession: Centuries of Nursing in Canada is at the heart of this year’s Ontario Women's History Network conference, which will be held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) on Saturday, October 22. A Caring Profession is the first national exhibition on the history of Canadian nursing.
On this occasion, curator Christina Bates will speak as will Dianne Dodd, co-editor with Ms. Bates and Nicole Rousseau of the exhibition’s companion volume, On All Frontiers: Four Centuries of Canadian Nursing, the first book published about Canadian nursing in more than half a century.
Canada has been celebrating Women’s History Month (WHM) in October since 1992. In 2005, WHM focuses on “Woman and War: Contributions and Consequences,” a theme explored in both the exhibition and its accompanying book. The Canadian War Museum, part of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation, also celebrated this year’s WHM theme when a commemorative plaque honouring the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Services was unveiled earlier this month.
Since its June opening, visitors have been very enthusiastic about A Caring Profession. “I am speechless; moved to tears; awed by its beauty!” said a First World War veteran. Another visitor remarked it “was a great experience to see the history of nursing in Canada in a ‘capsule’ so to speak. The evolution of technology has changed the work, but the caring for the patient today is as important if not more so. Thank you.”
October was designated Women’s History Month to commemorate the Person’s Case. It was on October 18, 1929 that Canadian women were officially granted the status of “persons” under the law.
A Caring Profession: Centuries of Nursing in Canada will be presented in Gallery E of the Canadian Museum of Civilization until September 4, 2006. More information is available at http://www.civilization.ca/cmc/nursing/nursee.html
