Canadian War Museum announces five $1,000 prizes for students

Ottawa, Ontario, October 27, Ottawa – The Canadian War Museum (CWM) today revealed the criteria for its revised History Awards, and announced that five $1,000 prizes are available to graduating secondary students from across Canada.

This year’s competition has been expanded, to encourage submissions in a wide range of media, including text, visual art, Web design and audio or video production. Full details and requirements of the competition can be found online at www.warmuseum.ca as of today, October 27.

“2005 marks the 60th Anniversary of the Second World War and the creation of the United Nations, and we feel that by broadening the scope of this year’s competition, we are encouraging creativity and diversity in submissions for CWM History Awards.” said Lisa Leblanc, Manager of Programmes and Interpretation.

The theme for the 2006 CWM History Awards is: Peacekeeping and the Middle East. The announcement was made as part of UN Day, a full day of activities at the CWM to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the creation of the United Nations, and the 50th Anniversary of the Suez Crisis, in which Lester B. Pearson proposed the creation of a UN peacekeeping force as a means of easing tensions in the Middle East; a plan which later garnered him the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Canadian War Museum History Awards have been in existence since 1998, and to date some $34,000 in prizes have been awarded to 25 students across the country.
