Roman Invasion comes to life at Canadian War Museum
Ottawa, Ontario, October 28, 2005 — The Canadian War Museum, in association with the Ottawa Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, presents an illustrated lecture by Dr. James Russell of the University of British Columbia on the Roman invasion of the British Isles.
Dr. Dean Oliver, Director Research and Exhibitions at the Canadian War Museum, will provide an introduction to the lecture. Dr. Russell will revisit the famous Roman historian Tacitus’ account of the invasion of northern Britain, culminating in the decisive defeat of the Caledonian tribes of the Scottish Highlands at Mons Graupius. Dr Russell will use new archaeological evidence to shed light on the invasion.

Dr. Russell’s research focuses on the archaeology of the Roman provinces, especially in Britain, Asia Minor, and Syria-Palestine. He is also an authority on Byzantine Archaeology. These interests have brought him to excavations in Greece, Turkey, and Israel. Dr. Russell completed his MA at the University of Edinburgh and his PhD at the University of Chicago. Now a professor in the Department of Classical, Near Eastern, and Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia, he formerly taught at the University of Manitoba and for Duke and Stanford Universities at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome.
