Five Aboriginal interns graduate from Museum’s training programme in museum practices

Hull, Quebec, April 22, 2002 - Five interns in the Aboriginal Training Programme in Museum Practices (ATPMP) have successfully completed an eight-month apprenticeship at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. They received their diplomas earlier today at a private ceremony at the Museum.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC) established the training program in September 1993, in response to recommendations in the 1992 Task Force Report on Museums and First Peoples. Since its inception, the CMCC Training Programme has enabled 54 Aboriginal trainees to upgrade their knowledge of museum practices.

The programme, providing significant experience in a stimulating learning environment, offers professional and technical training in museum practices for Aboriginal workers and students. All training is under the supervision of the Museum’s professional staff in a variety of fields, including conservation, archaeology, documentation of artifacts, archives, collections, ethnology and history. In return, the interns share their knowledge with Museum personnel and play an important role in maintaining communication between the CMCC and their communities. Training is available in both official languages.

The interns come from across the country. This year’s graduates are Kerri McDonnell, Cree Nation of Grand Rapids, Manitoba; Shirley Muldon, Gitksan Nation, Hazelton, British Colombia; Georgina J. Nicloux, Northern Tutchtone, member of the First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun, Mayo, Yukon Territory; Claudette Rocan, Metis, Winnipeg, Manitoba; and Jessica Tomic-Baghsaw, Inuk, of Ottawa.
