Tenth group of interns enters the Aboriginal Training Programme in Museum Practices at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Gatineau, Quebec, August 30, 2002 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization's Aboriginal Training Programme in Museum Practices (ATPMP) is embarking on its tenth year with a new group of interns starting on September 4. This eight-month programme offers vocational and technical training in museum practices to Aboriginal workers and students from across Canada.
All training is under the supervision of the Museum’s professional staff in a variety of fields, including conservation, archaeology, documentation of artifacts, archives, collections, ethnology, history and administration. In return, the interns share their knowledge with Museum personnel and play an important role in maintaining communication between their communities and the CMCC. Training is available in both official languages.
This year's interns are Rose Alexis, Okanagan First Nation (British Columbia); Robert First Charger, Standoff Blackfoot (Alberta); Michael Cywink, Objibwa M' Chigeeng First Nation, Manitoulin Island (Ontario); Jason Bear, Muskoday First Nation (Saskatchewan); and Réginald Flamand, Attikamek Nation, Manawan (Quebec).
The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC) established the Training Programme in September 1993 in response to recommendations contained in the 1992 Task Force Report on Museums and First Peoples. Since its inception, the CMCC Training Programme has enabled 54 Aboriginal trainees to upgrade their knowledge of museum practices.
