Windows on the World: Wings to Fly!
at the Canadian Postal Museum

Hull, Quebec, December 5, 2001 — The Canadian Postal Museum at the Canadian Museum of Civilization is pleased to announce the opening of the third and final section of its Windows on the World series. Opening on December 7, 2001, Window on the World: Wings to Fly! is a magnificent exhibition that invites seasoned philatelists and newcomers alike to discover the flight of man and animals through the postage stamps in the international philatelic collection of the Canadian Postal Museum.

Following The Canadian Postal Museum’s International Philatelic Collection and Stamps of La Francophonie in the Canadian Postal Museum’s Windows on the World series, Wings to Fly features more than 2,500 postage stamps and souvenir sheets of birds, winged insects, planes and helicopters from close to 75 countries and postal administrations around the world.

Birds
Postage stamps devoted to birds show the vast diversity of species in the world. Ducks from Uganda, parrots from Cuba, sparrows from Sri Lanka and hummingbirds from the British Virgin Islands are reproduced in painstaking detail, often in their natural habitat. Visitors will be able to admire scenes with pink flamingos parading in marshes, albatrosses gliding over the ocean and crows in sharp contrast against the snow.

Winged Insects
Insects make up an immense body of philatelic art. Dragonflies, bees, butterflies and dozens of small winged insects are presented flying in formation or solo, resting on a flower or a leaf.

Planes and Helicopters
Most of the world’s postal administrations have issued stamps devoted to aviation. Planes and helicopters make up many of the winged machines reproduced on postage stamps. Pioneers of aviation have been immortalized as well — the Wright brothers, Lindbergh and others, along with numerous events in the history of aviation (first trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific flights, the arrival of the first air mail to an island nation, etc.).

Windows on the World: Wings to Fly! was produced thanks to the collaboration of the volunteer team at the Canadian Postal Museum: Normand Audette, Paul Gray, Pauline Lacombe, William Mattos, Joe and Jessie Murray, George Sawatzki, Émilien Thérien and Claire Vachon. This exhibition will be presented at the Canadian Postal Museum until March 2002.
