The Canadian Postal Museum presents the collection of 15-year-old Kurt Glatzfelder

Hull, Quebec, December 12, 2001 — The Canadian Postal Museum at the Canadian Museum of Civilization is proud to present, for the first time in its history, the collection of a junior philatelist. On display until May 27, 2002, the exhibition entitled Exploring Space, located in the Collector’s Corner, features the most interesting specimens in the collection of young Kurt Glatzfelder on a subject that fascinates him — the exploration of space.

Only 15 years old, this collector from Dollard-des-Ormeaux in Quebec invites visitors to relive and remember the great moments and personalities that have marked the history of the conquest of space. Through more than 200 stamps, commemorative panes and first-day issues from countries including Hungary, Romania, Russia, Poland, Panama, Bhutan, Monaco, Mongolia and the United States, this student from Riverdale High School in Pierrefonds, Quebec conjures up memories of the launch of sputniks, the birth of NASA, the Apollo missions and many other memorable moments, in the illustrious company of the likes of Jules Verne, Iouri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong. The exhibition focuses on the pioneers of space, satellites and manned missions, as well as space probes, stations and space shuttles. Among these space-age personalities, satellites, rocket ships and shuttles, every visitor is sure to find at least one familiar name or memory.

Some of the most interesting pieces presented by Glatzfelder include a first-day issue from Poland featuring Nicolas Copernicus; a Bulgarian first-day issue showing Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovski; another Russian first-day issue with Iouri Gagarin, the first man to orbit the earth; and a 3-D commemorative pane from Bhutan showing astronaut Neil Armstrong and his famous “giant step for mankind.” In addition, he presents a first-day issue cancelled at the NASA post office on December 21, 1968, the very day of the Apollo 8 launch — one of the most prized pieces in his collection.

Kurt has been passionate about philately since the age of seven, and the quality of his research and presentations has won him major prizes since 1999. Last summer, the Lakeshore Stamp Club, which he joined in 1997, hosted the Royale*2001*Royal, one of the most prestigious philatelic exhibitions in Canada. During his very first national exhibition, Glatzfelder won a number of prizes, including the Grand Prix for youth from the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors. He was also named Young Canadian Philatelic Exhibitor of the Year and won the Michener Medal. In addition, he will be Canada’s proud representative at the World Philatelic Exhibition of 2002 in Seoul, Korea and at the 2002 World Youth Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
