The Canadian Museum of Civilization presents The Great Peace: Chronicle of a Diplomatic Saga

Hull, Quebec, July 27, 2001 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization is pleased to be associated with Éditions Libre Expression – in a co-publication venture with the Corporation des fêtes de la Grande Paix de Montréal and the Pointe-à-Callière Museum, Montreal's museum of archaeology and history – for the publication of the English version of the book La Grande Paix - Chronique d'une saga diplomatique, by Alain Beaulieu and Roland Viau. The English version, The Great Peace: Chronicle of a Diplomatic Saga, is distributed by the Canadian Museum of Civilization. It is now on sale at the Museum and will be available starting August 4 at major Canadian bookstores through the Museum's distribution network with the University of British Columbia Press. The book will also be available in American bookstores this fall through the University of Washington Press.

The Great Peace: Chronicle of a Diplomatic Saga is a vivid description in words and images of the negotiations that led to the Great Peace of 1701 between the French and the Amerindians – 39 First Nations from the St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes including the Iroquois, who took part in this epochal political event at the end of the seventeenth century.

Historian Alain Beaulieu and anthropologist Roland Viau are our guides on this extraordinary journey into our past. Francis Back, an illustrator and expert on the material culture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, has produced many original illustrations, including a remarkable 3D reconstitution of Montreal created in collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Architecture.

This voyage to New France unfolds in eleven chapters in which the knowledge
of historians is complemented by rich and diverse illustrations and images.
The authors, inspired by the writings of Bacqueville de La Potherie, a witness to the events, lead us through the myriad actions that marked that
unforgettable summer.

The publication of the book coincides with celebrations for the 300th anniversary of the signing of the great peace treaty on August 4, 1701. The Corporation des fêtes de la Grande Paix de Montréal, formed by the Pointe-à-Callière Museum and the Aboriginal organization Land InSights, have organized numerous events to mark the anniversary. All summer, the Pointe-à-Callière Museum will present an exhibition on the Great Peace of 1701. The Great Peace: Chronicle of a Diplomatic Saga will be the showcase piece of the exhibition. The Canadian Museum of Civilization is proud to have made it possible for this book to be available in English throughout Canada and the United States.
