Windows on the World: Stamps of La FrancophonieHull, Quebec, June 20, 2001 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization is proud to present a new exhibition called Windows on the World: Stamps of La Francophonie which opened yesterday at the Canadian Postal Museum. Coinciding with the IVth Games of La Francophonie, Windows on the World: Stamps of La Francophonie presents stamps and souvenir sheets from 49 countries taking part in the games. These items, selected from the Canadian Postal Museum's international philatelic collection, highlight the sports and culture of each of these countries.
Approximately 2,500 stamps, covering the last three decades of the 20th century, have been chosen and mounted by a team of Canadian Postal Museum volunteers. Culture and sport become a universal language when postal administrations commemorate a major sports event or illustrate the music and dance of their people. The exhibition highlights the design quality and complexity of these stamps. No two are alike. They are miniature ambassadors of the many countries taking part in the Games.
Windows on the World: Stamps of La Francophonie includes rare stamps issued to commemorate Paralympic events and showing the evolution of sport. There are also stamps depicting dance, music, literature, poetry, story telling, painting, sculpture and theatre, as well as sports such as soccer, judo, basketball, table tennis and track and field.
The collection will be on display from June 19, 2001 until the fall of 2001 in the Canadian Postal Museum of the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
