Canadian Museum of Civilization Named Best Cultural Attraction in Canada

Hull, Quebec, May 31, 2001 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) is one of this year's big winners in the third annual Attractions Canada competition. Recognized for its innovation, visitor satisfaction, and promotion and marketing efforts, as well as its economic and social benefits to the community, the CMC took first place in the Indoor Site category for institutions with a budget over $400,000.

The CMC is one of 14 sites, selected from 98 provincial and territorial winners, to receive a national Attractions Canada award.

"We are extremely proud to have been chosen as a winner in this major cultural category," commented Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. "It means that we are considered, along with other winners this year such as the Columbia Icefield, the Jardin botanique de Montréal and the historic Pier 21 in Halifax, as one of the premier destinations for any visitor wanting to appreciate the stunning beauty and cultural richness of Canada."

Last year, the CMC had close to 1.4 million visitors - making it the most visited museum in Canada. In 2000, the Museum featured India - The Living Arts, a major exhibition complemented by extensive public programmes, performances and presentations by Indian artisans, in partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts and other sponsors. As well, the landmark exhibition Canvas of War: Masterpieces from the Canadian War Museum, now starting an extensive national tour, brought to public view Canada's rich war art collections from the First and Second World Wars.

Visitors to the CMC also enjoyed the Museum's permanent exhibitions and activities such as the Grand Hall, which highlights the Pacific Coast First Peoples, the Canada Hall, with its overview of a thousand years of history, the Canadian Children's Museum, the Canadian Postal Museum and the IMAX® Theatre.

The Attractions Canada competition aims to recognize the unique character of Canada's many tourist attractions and to promote the quality, success, innovation and diversity of attractions of cultural and educational value that represent the cultural and ethnic diversity of Canada's dynamic and modern mosaic.

The Attractions Canada 2001 Awards Gala, paying tribute to the winners, took place on May 23 at Pier 21 in Halifax.
