Art works and objects from the exhibition India - The Living Arts — Two-Day Silent Auction to Raise Funds for Victims of the Earthquake in India, February 15 and 16, 2001

Hull (Quebec), February 1, 2001 — The magic of India - The Living Arts will draw to a close on February 18. Before the exhibition leaves, the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) invites you to tour it one last time so that you can take part in a silent auction on hundreds of the objects and art works in this marvelous exhibition, on Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16.

All net profits from the auction will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross to help the victims of the violent earthquake last week in Gujurat State in India. The Museum has also set up a box at the entrance of the exhibition for donations from visitors who want to help the victims.

"At the Canadian Museum of Civilization, we have enjoyed a marvelous range of activities in the course of the India - The Living Arts exhibition, which have created close ties with the Indian community," explained Canadian Museum of Civilization President and CEO Victor Rabinovitch. "We are deeply saddened by the terrible catastrophe that has struck the people of India, and we want to do something tangible to provide assistance to the people of Gujarat State."

These objects and art works created by the artists and craftspeople of India were specially selected for the exhibition to recreate the enchanting environment of life in India. Beautiful fabrics and paintings, a richly sculpted door and a spectacular marble fountain are among the 150 remarkable objects to be auctioned, testimony to the artistic wealth of one of the world's greatest civilizations. The value of the objects and paintings varies widely, with initial bids ranging from $10 to $5,000.

For the price of admission to the Museum, those interested in bidding can register for the auction at any time during the sale period. Registration and the bidding process will take place at the Canadian Museum of Civilization during hours of business: on Thursday, February 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, February 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Participants are also allowed to return to the Museum to raise their offers at any time during the auctions, without having to repay the Museum's admission fee. Please note that Museum admission is free on Thursdays after 4:00 p.m.

The winning bids will be announced at a reception on Friday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. Results will also be posted on the Museum's Web site at http://www.civilization.ca/cmc/cmceng/aucteng.html. The first 100 registrants will receive a unique souvenir of India.

During the auction period, the Museum's temporary boutique will be offering last-minute sales of related articles. The boutique will remain open until 8:00 p.m. on February 16.
