New Canadian War Museum Announces Finalists in Architectural Competition

Ottawa, Ontario, August 28, 2001 — The Canadian War Museum (CWM) today announced the names of the five architectural firms that will be asked to compete for the architectural design of the new CWM.

This shortlist was chosen through a process called quality-based selection, based on responses to a formal Request for Information (RFI). The responses were evaluated on the basis of past architectural projects in museums and other public institutions, capability for delivering the project on time and within budget, and other key factors. The new Museum is to be built at LeBreton Flats, west of Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa.

"We were very pleased to see the interest this selection process generated from eminent architectural and engineering firms from across Canada and internationally," said Mr. Joe Geurts, Director and CEO of the CWM. "A very important step has been taken today. I am confident that the five finalists will rise to the challenge of providing interesting approaches for the architecture and building project of a new Canadian War Museum, whose purpose is to preserve and present the military history of Canada."

A total of 21 architectural teams responded to the RFI call. The shortlist selection was made by the CWM Building Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. It was supported by an Evaluation Committee that carried out a detailed analysis of all submissions received.
