The IMAX® Theatre Presents the Greatest Survival Story of All Time

Hull, October 2, 2001 — Starting October 5, 2001, visitors to the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX Theatre will be invited to take part in a voyage like no other with Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure, presented on the IMAX screen.

In 1914, polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, leader of the British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, set out to be the first to cross Antarctica. His ship, the Endurance, was trapped and crushed in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea, and a 22-month struggle for survival ensued. Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure retraces the travels and trials of Shackleton and his men as they lived on ice floes, survived an 800-mile lifeboat journey through violent and frigid seas, and traversed the treacherous, unexplored mountains and glaciers of South Georgia Island. Although the expedition never accomplished its goal as the first crossing of the Antarctic continent, it became a larger-than-life testament to the heroism and human endurance that ensured the survival of all 28 men.

Beyond including the super-sized, crystal-clear, “you-are-there” images for which giant-screen films are best known, Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure features the original still photography and 35mm motion-picture footage of Frank Hurley, official photographer of the Endurance expedition. These images provide viewers of Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure with an intimate look at the experiences of these 28 men as they struggled to survive and save themselves.

The film is a co-production of White Mountain Films and NOVA/WGBH Boston, and is narrated by Academy-Award® winner Kevin Spacey (American Beauty).

Joining Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure on the film schedule this fall are Journey into Amazing Caves, presented on the IMAX screen, and the very successful film Dolphins, presented on the IMAX DOME. All three films will run through the fall season.
