Collecting Craft in the New Millennium symposium announced

Hull, Quebec, October 30, 2001 — On November 20, 2001, the 25th Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in the Crafts will be presented at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Prior to the event, craftspeople — including previous Saidye Bronfman Award recipients, representatives of institutions that collect craft works, and members of arts and crafts organizations and funding agencies — will meet in the Museum’s Ateliers for a symposium entitled Collecting Craft in the New Millennium. The Canadian Museum of Civilization is the lead partner in the organization of this event, with support from The Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Crafts Council and the Conseil des Métiers d’art du Québec.

Four sessions are planned for the day-long symposium, which will feature speakers from across the country. The event will kick off with historical accounts of the collection of craft in Canada. Curators and art historians Sandra Flood, Ellen Easton McLeod and Sandra Alfoldy will investigate various factors that have affected the collecting of craft-based materials in the past.

Two sessions focussed on specific media will follow. One will examine several collections of ceramics and glass that have been created or noticeably strengthened in the recent past, including those of the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. The other session will explore the role that textiles play within museums and galleries across the country, with presentations by representatives of the Textile Museum of Canada, the Cambridge Galleries, and textile artists Dorothy Caldwell and Marcel Marois, who are both previous Saidye Bronfman Award recipients.

The final session will examine several institutions in the National Capital Region that are collecting work in craft-based media. The differing histories and contexts of collections such as those of the Canada Council Art Bank and the Canadian Museum of Civilization will be explored.

The goal of the symposium is to strengthen the network of information about future collection directions, exhibitions and documentation, as well as to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas amongst craftspeople, curators, critics and funding agencies.

The symposium is open to the public. However, numbers will be limited. Participants must register by November 9, 2001. To register, interested participants can telephone Ms. Estelle Lauzon at the Canadian Museum of Civilization at (819) 776-8478,
or e-mail Estelle.Lauzon@civilization.ca.

The symposium will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on November 20, 2001 and will include a luncheon.
