THE GALS ARE COMING…November 19 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull

We of the fairer sex have been called a lot of things over the past 100 years: ladies, dames, broads, chicks - but I prefer “gals.” Gals are the type who can powder their nose as they kick a few butts, “Janes” who ain’t afraid to pull up their sleeves, dive in, break a few nails and get the job done right. This is our story and I’m stickin’ to it! (Cathy Jones as Gals reporter “Babe”)

Cathy Jones of This Hour Has 22 Minutes fame will be just part of the fun surrounding the gala premiere of 20th Century Gals, a one-hour, tongue-in-cheek “docu-dramedy” on Canadian women and the impact they have made on contemporary Canadian life. The production was filmed here in Ottawa and in Hull at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Written by Sylvia Spring of Making Waves Productions and produced by local producer Hoda Elatawi in association with Ottawa-based production company GAPC, Gals was created, shot and compiled in the nation’s capital over the past couple of years as the television element of a three-part Canadian Millennium package. The other elements include a book, Framing Our Past: Canadian Women’s History in the Twentieth Century, and a Web site, http://www.womencan.ca .

The gala event will kick off at 7:00 p.m in the Marius Barbeau Salon of the Canadian Museum of Civilization at 100 Laurier Street in Hull. Opening remarks will begin at 7:30 p.m. The guest line-up includes Cathy Jones (as Babe), actress Meg Hogarth (as Nellie McClung), the Honourable Hedy Fry, Minister for the Status of Women Canada, Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Museum, and producers Hoda Elatawi and Sylvia Spring.

Local cast and crew members will also be attending, in addition to representatives from all levels of government, women’s organizations, universities, unions and local and national media. A cocktail reception will follow at 8:45 p.m., featuring dancers from the Ottawa Swing Society, a vintage 1936 Packard and various other surprises. Guests are invited to dress “20th Century Style,” choosing their own decade!

20th Century Gals is scheduled to air on CBC Television one week later on November 26 at 8:00 p.m.
