Canadian Museum of Civilization Signs Agreement with National Museum of China

Gatineau, Quebec, January 20, 2005 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) and the National Museum of China signed an agreement in Beijing earlier today as part of Prime Minister Paul Martin’s official visit. The agreement, signed by CMC President Dr. Victor Rabinovitch and Mr. Pan Zhenzhou, Director of the National Museum of China, will set the stage for an exchange of exhibitions between the two museums. The ceremony took place in the Great Hall of the People, in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and Premier Wen Jiabao of the People’s Republic of China.

“This historic agreement between our museums means that two landmark exhibitions will now be created for a major international exchange. In Canada, for the first time, we will see
treasures of Chinese art and civilization that are masterpieces of human achievement,” said Dr. Rabinovitch. The Canadian Museum of Civilization will create an exhibition for China that displays treasures from Canada’s First Peoples. By looking at the ancient cultures of both countries, we can better appreciate the wider human experience and place recent accomplishments into perspective.”

This exchange is the first official Canada-China activity to be announced following the signing of the Cultural Agreement between the Canadian and Chinese governments, which also took place in Beijing today.

In 2007, visitors to the Canadian Museum of Civilization will be able to explore the rich history of China during 4,000 years of dynastic rule, by viewing exquisite objects created during different periods. Masterpieces in bronze and jade, paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, embroidery, costumes, lacquerware, stone carvings, gold and silver will illustrate the world in which they were made, and the societies that used them.

“Staff at the Canadian Museum of Civilization are working closely with their colleagues in China to strengthen public understanding of the histories of our two countries,” said Claudette Roy, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the CMCC. “Our Museum is proud to be a part of this important cultural exchange, which will give pleasure and knowledge to visitors in both countries.”
