The Powwow: An Art History
From: October 25, 2002 To: August 17, 2003 |
This exhibition presents an Aboriginal art history in relation to the development of the powwow from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. Seventy-five works by forty-six artists have been borrowed from public and private collections throughout Canada and the United States. The artists represent a diversity of intention, motivation and style. As with the ever-changing traditions of powwow, the artists document, describe and express in order to preserve, reclaim and endure. The Powwow: An Art History contributes to the development of an inclusive, relevant art history and confirms the future vitality for both powwow and Aboriginal art.
Organized by the MacKenzie Art Gallery with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Museums Assistance Program.
