This Other Eden: Canadian Folk Art Outdoors
From: May 20, 1999 To: January 9, 2000 |
Folk artists have always had a fondness for outdoor locations of all kinds. For the most part, their artworks are intended for the natural environment. Consequently, what could be more natural than to present This Other Eden: Canadian Folk Art Outdoors in its natural habitat: outdoors! A garden with scenes from the Front Lawn, the Barnyard, the Porch and the Private Backyard Garden created inside the Canadian Museum of Civilization invites visitors to wander at their leisure to the sounds of babbling brooks and birdsong. Close to 150 folk art pieces from all across Canada will decorate this fantasy garden: sculptures and bird houses, whirligigs and weathervanes, flowers, scarecrows, fish, ducks, frogs and wading birds. This world of humble objects lovingly created by artists who are too often ignored and rarely paid the respect of the "legitimate" art world will conjure smiles and memories. Garden benches, a gazebo and a pond will all add to the pastoral atmosphere of the exhibition, which is presented by Investors Group.
