"In this film, originally entitled In the Land of the Head Hunters, Curtis retold a tribal story of love and revenge among the Kwakiutl Indians of Vancouver Island. Curtis spent three years with the Kwakiutl to meticulously recreate their way of life before the white man came. In addition to the magnificent painted war canoes of the title, the film features wonderful native costumes, dancing and rituals ─ including a powerful scene of vision quest."

The video tells the story of Frobisher's failed settlement in the area of Baffin Island, and follows a team of archaeologists from the Canadian Museum of Civilization who went to study the remains of this small settlement in Arctic Canada.

By excavating ancient campsites scattered across the Arctic, archaeologists have discovered that the first inhabitants of this forbidding land were a Siberian people known today as the Paleoeskimos. They migrated into North America around 2000 B.C. and then, sometime between 500 and 1,000 years ago, they disappeared. This production focuses on the unique art of these people and speculates on their way of life and religious beliefs.
