Excavation of a stratified Archaic site. The black bands in the walls of the excavation represent ancient living floors, with the lowest floor dating at 1700 B.C. and the uppermost floor at 1000 B.C. This particular site on the shore of Lake Huron was a favourite fishing location which was used seasonally by Archaic peoples for many years. Windblown sands off the beach covered each sequential occupation, thus creating the excellent stratification.
