From Québec, 1634

Monsieur de Champlain wishes to extend his colony.

It was on the orders of Monsieur Samuel de Champlain that a certain Laviolette was recently transported from Québec to the confluence of the Saint Maurice and Saint Lawrence Rivers. We have learned that since July 4, 1634, this ex-trader has been directing the construction of a post which will bear the name of the place: Trois-Rivières.

Laviolette is accompanied by tradesmen and soldiers who are constructing a fort and the first buildings, which will be used for their lodgings and to store the merchandise they took with them. This event may mark the birth of a second town in New France. Laviolette, whose full name is not known, will be the first commander of the Trois-Rivières post.

More than a century after it was founded, the city of Trois-Rivières had lost the characteristic look of a trading post, but retained its extremely advantageous position on the Saint Lawrence River.
