From La Rochelle, May, 1627

The "Montréalistes" leave the motherland

Having left France in May 1641, the three ships carrying the founders of Ville-Marie (Montréal) respectively arrive in New France in July, August and September of the following year. After a long stay in Québec, they disembark in Ville-Marie, on May 14, 1642. (Confederation Life Collection.)

At the beginning of this month of May, 1641, a dozen men hired to join the founders of Ville-Marie, on the island of have left Dieppe to go to Canada. We were informed that the workers will stop in Québec to construct the warehouses that will shelter the building materials and the food which the small colony will require when they leave Québec to establish themselves on the island of Montréal.

 

They have agreed not to take any initiative before the leaders of this expedition, Mademoiselle Jeanne Mance and Monsieur de Maisonneuve arrive in Québec. The departed from La Rochelle on May 9, on board a separate ship each. Maisonneuve embarked with 25 recruits and a secular priest. Mademoiselle Mance, whom is said to be very capable, has embarked on the other ship with twelve other recruits and Father Jacques de la Place, a Jesuit.
