In the 17th century, Canadian peasant women wore costumes similar to those
of French women of the same social status. |

- Population
In order to create New France, administrators and civil
servants of the kingdom of France had to convince common people that in North America they
would have independence and freedom. Recruiting and emigration were supported in part by
large commercial companies. In two centuries, fewer than 10,000 people joined the first
contingents formed of soldiers, workers, settlers, tradesmen and their families.
Among the portraits drawn under the theme of population: settlers, lords, Les Filles du
Roi, soldiers of the Carignan-Salières regiment, trappers, merchants...
To this general line of study will subsequently be added those of the family,
demography and genealogy.
