Notices EXPORT CONTROLS
TO MYANMAR (BURMA)
Serial No. 100
Date: August 11, 1997
Last reviewed: August 2006
Table of Contents
1.1 This Notice is to advise exporters that the Canadian
Government has decided to add Myanmar (formerly Burma) to the Area
Control List (ACL), the list of countries to which the exportation
of goods is not permitted without the requirement of obtaining an export
permit.
2.1 This Notice reflects the Canadian Government's
response to the deteriorating human rights situation in Myanmar, the
renewed humanitarian crisis on the Thai-Myanmar border and the repressive
measures being taken by the ruling military State Law and Order Restoration
Council against Aung San Suu Kyi and the pro-democracy movement. In
light of the recent resolutions by both the United Nations Commission
on Human Rights and the General Assembly deploring the human rights
violations in Myanmar, the Canadian Government has decided to add Myanmar
to the Area Control List authorized under the Export and Import
Permits Act and thus require an export permit for the exportation
of all goods to Myanmar.
3.1 All export permit applications will be reviewed
on a case-by-case basis and permits for humanitarian goods, including
food, clothing, medicines, medical supplies, information material, casual
gifts and personal effects belonging to persons leavingCanada for Myanmar,
will generally be approved. Permits for other goods will generally be
denied.
4.1 Under the authority of Section 6 of the Export
and Imports Permits Act, the Governor-in-Council added Myanmar to
the Area Control List effective August 5, 1997.
