More Information
The Canadian Television Fund (CTF or Fund) was created in 1996 to support the production and broadcast of high-quality, distinctively Canadian television programs. The result of a private-public partnership, the CTF is financed by contributions from the Government of Canada, the Canadian cable and direct-to-home satellite industries and Telefilm Canada.
The objectives of the CTF are:
- to encourage the financing and broadcasting of high-quality Canadian television productions;
- to reflect Canada to Canadians by assisting the creation and broadcast, in primetime, of high-quality, culturally significant Canadian programs in both official languages in the genres of drama, children's and youth, documentaries and variety and performaning arts, and by both majority and minority official language sectors;
- to support Aboriginal-language productions in the eligible genres.
Eligibility Criteria
The Fund focuses its support on currently licenced projects intended primarily for Canadian audiences and seeks to encourage Canadian viewing of these productions. These projects must be initiated by Canadian companies, under Canadian ownership, who exercise creative and financial control from development through production to distribution and exhibition.
The Fund is a cultural programming fund. It does not support "industrial" or "foreign service" productions or those that cede control to foreign entities.
Summary
The Canadian Television Fund (CTF) is an independent, non-profit corporation, governed by a Board of Directors comprised of representatives from the Canadian production and distribution community, the federal government, Canadian cable and direct-to-home satellite companies, and Canadian broadcasters. The Department of Canadian Heritage has restored its 100 million dollar contribution to the CTF for the 2005-2006 fiscal year.
The spirit and intent of the Fund is to support the production and broadcast of a specific type of culturally significant television and film production. These productions speak to Canadians about themselves, their culture, their issues, their concerns and their stories. These productions reflect the lives of Canadians across the country and reveal Canadians and their society to the viewer.
The Fund supports a high volume of distinctively and identifiably Canadian broadcast programming, reflecting Canadian culture, stories and themes. These productions are in English, French and Aboriginal languages and include children's and youth documentary, drama and variety and performing arts programming.
