Exhibitions

Tractors
Follow the 100-year-old story of the farm tractor, from unfamiliar oddity to common-place tool on the Canadian farm. Walk among ten tractors from the Museum’s collection to see how they have become safer, more powerful, more versatile and more comfortable. Feel the difference between riding on the steel wheels of old and today’s rubber tires. Learn how tractors contribute to the feeding and clothing of Canadians.

Food for Health  New!
Opening March 1, 2007
This innovative exhibition on the vital importance of food and food safety in our everyday lives will remain at the Canada Agriculture Museum until October 31, 2007, when it will travel to other museums across Canada.

The Farm: Plugged-In  New!
Discover the impact electricity had on farmers’ routine household chores, from the turn of the last century to today, in this exhibition tracing the period of rural electrification in Canada. You can even see the Beck Circus, a travelling exhibit from the early 1900s that showed the wonders electricity brought to farms.

The exhibitions The Farm: Plugged-In and Tractors are presented in the loft of the Dairy Barn from March 1 to October 31, 2006.

Animal Barns
Our Animal Barns are busy year round with daily cow milking and other farm chores. We tend our over 200 farm animals such as calves, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, our big Hereford bull, as well as heritage breeds. Chickens, ducks and turkeys are on display from early June to mid-October. Tour the Animal Barns on your own, or take a guided tour, year round. Tours must be arranged in advance by calling 613 991-3053.

Activities and Programs

From March through October, informative and hands-on daily demonstrations by our Museum Interpreters bring agricultural knowledge, our exhibitions, and artifacts to life.

Birthday Parties* for children can be booked year round. For ages 3 to 12, parties include a personalized tour of the barns, making and eating ice cream, a game and a craft.

Summer Day Camps* offer children ages 4 to 14 a unique and enriching experience in our demonstration farm setting. Telephone registration opens February 20, 2006.

Guided Tours* of our Animal Barns are available year round and must be arranged in advance.

School Programs* extend and enrich the classroom experience in a stimulating education environment.

Special Invitation to Seniors – every Tuesday during the months of March through October, seniors (60+) are admitted free.

Horse-drawn Tally-Ho Wagon Rides will take you back to the time when horses were the main locomotive power. Rides are offered on a varying schedule until the end of October, weather permitting. Call 613 991-3044 or visit agriculture.technomuses.ca for a schedule.

For Scouts Canada and Girl Guides of Canada, the Museum’s fascinating animal barns, large outdoor spaces, central Ottawa location and free parking make an ideal destination for group activities.
