Central Experimental Farm

Central Experimental Farm

The Central Experimental Farm was established in 1886. The Minister of Agriculture at the time was Sir John Carling. At the same time 4 other research stations were established across Canada:

  • Nappan, Nova Scotia
  • Brandon, Manitoba
  • Indian Head, Saskatchewan
  • Agassiz, British Columbia

Today there are 18 research stations across Canada.

There are numerous stations simply due to different climates, topography, length of growing seasons, soil types, crops, etc. that exist across Canada.

The Central Experimental Farm today covers about 500 hectares (1250 acres). It houses the head offices for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and some research facilities. Most of the land is used for experimental field plots, where experimental corn, soybeans, oats and other crops are grown.

The Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is the largest agriculture and food research organization in Canada. For more information, visit http://www.agr.ca.
