Michael Potter brings history alive with Friday Fly Days

Ottawa—The Canada Aviation Museum is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with Ottawa entrepreneur and vintage aircraft enthusiast, Michael Potter, that will see the skies of Ottawa roar with the sights and sounds of some of the rarest and most historically significant aircraft in the world.

The Canada Aviation Museum, in collaboration with Vintage Wings of Canada, Mr. Potter’s new, not-for-profit private foundation devoted to preserving and operating the largest collection of privately owned, airworthy vintage aircraft in Canada, is proud to announce the launch of Fly Days Summer 2006. Every Friday afternoon, visitors are invited to the Museum to watch the skies for flypasts by a select few of the vintage aircraft from the Vintage Wings of Canada collection.

At approximately 1:30 every Friday afternoon from July 7 to August 25, aviation buffs and museum goers alike will marvel at the sight of beautifully and carefully restored vintage aircraft flying over the Museum or on the ground for a close-up look upon landing.

“The Museum is very excited as this new endeavour takes flight this Friday” says Kyla Tichkowsky Museum Education Officer. “We chose Friday afternoons as the perfect finish for our Aerotech Day campers as they end their five-day camp with a flight in a Cessna 172. The children will really benefit from seeing these amazing flight displays.”

The Canada Aviation Museum will host Vintage Wings of Canada as it offers a different aircraft every week from its collection of nine military and civilian vintage aircraft. As of today, the collection, which is housed in its new, 1930s style hangar at the Gatineau Airport, consists of a WACO Taperwing, a Beech D17S Staggerwing, a De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver, a North American Harvard MK-4, a De Havilland Tiger Moth, a Hawker Hurricane MK 1V, a Hawker Hurricane MKXXI, a Supermarine Spitfire MK XVI, and a North American Mustang MK IV.

“We believe that showcasing these marvellous aircraft is a most effective way to gain the attention of young people and direct their interest into science, engineering, military and political history and give them an appreciation of the lives of many outstanding Canadians who have shaped our country in a most extraordinary way,” said Vintage Wings of Canada founder, Michael Potter.

Both the Museum and Vintage Wings of Canada are very pleased with this new collaboration that is allowing the two organizations to jointly contribute to aviation heritage and support each other’s programs in a unique and very meaningful way.

The Canada Aviation Museum is the finest aviation Museum of its kind in Canada. The Museum is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Be sure to visit our website every Wednesday to find out which of the selected aircraft will be flying on the Friday Fly Days Summer 2006. You can also learn more about the aircraft that will be flying this summer by visiting the Vintage Wings of Canada website at www.vintagewings.ca.
