Student Work Program

The Office of the Ethics Commissioner is offering a Student Work Program to Canadian university students. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to gain work experience within the environment of the Parliament of Canada.

The Background

The mandate of the Office of the Ethics Commissioner is to:

  1. administer the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons as part of that responsibility, our Office maintains the registry of the public disclosure summaries of Members. Office also administers the Prime Minister's Conflict of Interest and Post-Employment Code for Public Office Holders; within that responsibility, the Ethics Commissioner is also charged with the Public Registry for Public Office Holders, including Ministers, Ministers of state and Parliamentary secretaries;
  2. provide confidential opinions to Members of the House of Commons and advice to Public Office Holders, on any matter respecting their obligations under the Code to which they are subject;
  3. conduct inquiries at the request of Parliamentarians on the conduct of Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries who are subject to the Public Office Holders’ Code, and at the request of a member of the House of Commons on the conduct of another member pursuant to the Members’ Code.
The Purpose

The aim of the program is to develop among university students practical experience in policy development, communication and administration processes related to the Conflict of Interest Codes.

The Duties

Under the supervision of a senior Advisor and/or Director, students may:

  • develop communication tools to inform the Canadian public and/or constituent groups of the practices and procedures in the Office of the Ethics Commissioner;
  • assist in conducting studies on policy issues relevant to Conflict of Interest;
  • conduct research in developing responses to questions from the Ethics Commissioner and the Deputy Ethics Commissioner;
  • provide assistance in other areas as required by the Office.
Your Qualifications

Candidates must:

  • be enrolled in a Bachelor's degree in Economics, Environmental studies, Public or Business Administration, Science, or Political or Social Science at a Canadian university; or be enrolled in a Canadian law school program (LL.B/LL.L) and have successfully completed first year in any of the above program;
  • have an interest in Parliament or the public policy process;
  • be objective and non-partisan;
  • possess good interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.

Preference will be given to bilingual candidates.

Duration

May 2006 – April 2007 - The duration may vary depending on the type of employment sought.
