CBC/Radio-Canada to Receive Honorary Golden Rose at the Montreux Festival

Ottawa — CBC/Radio-Canada will be awarded an honorary Golden Rose at the world-renowned Montreux Festival. The recognizes the quality of programming CBC/Radio-Canada consistently delivers at home and throughout the world, a fact underlined by the five Golden Rose Awards, the two Silver Rose Awards and the Bronze Award the Corporation has garnered since the Festival came into being 38 years ago.

The Honourable Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the CBC, will be presented with the honorary Golden Rose at a ceremony to be held April 25th at Montreux Palace, in Switzerland. Mr. Armin Walpen, Director General of the Switzerland Broadcasting Corporation, will present the Award. Among invited guests will be Canada's Abassador to Switzerland, Réjean Frenette. Canadian artist Ashley MacIsaac will perform at the special evening.

The Golden Rose of Montreux is the only Festival to be exclusively devoted to light entertainment programming for television, cable and satellite. The broadcasters, independent producers and new creators from around the world who participate in the Festival have one thing in common: they all share a passion for excellence in Television.

"I am delighted that CBC/Radio-Canada is being honoured with this prestigious prize," said Mr. Beatty. "With a total of five Golden Roses to its credit, CBC/Radio-Canada has won the highest number of first prizes of any organization in the history of the Montreux Festival. It is especially gratifying to receive an honorary Golden Rose at this time, when CBC/Radio-Canada is moving ahead into a very promising and hopeful future," he added.

The 1998 Golden Rose of the Montreux Festival will be held from April 23 to 28.
