CBC/Radio-Canada Announces Recipients of the 2003 CBC Newsworld Joan Donaldson Scholarship

TORONTO — CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO Robert Rabinovitch is pleased to announce that eight journalism students from across Canada have been selected to receive the 2003 CBC Newsworld Joan Donaldson Scholarship. This year's recipients include:

Derron Bodell, Concordia University, Montreal
Angela Chang, University of King's College, Halifax
Jeremy Keehn, University of British Columbia, Vancouver
Raelyne Linton, University of Regina, Regina
Nicola Luksic, Carleton University, Ottawa
Rick Matthews, Ryerson University, Toronto
Zulekha Nathoo, University of Western Ontario, London
Corey Snook, University of Western Ontario, London

The 2003 Joan Donaldson Scholars have demonstrated a commitment to the ideals of public interest journalism, academic excellence and community involvement. Each will receive a cash award of $2,000.00, special training and an intensive four-month internship with CBC News.

"These are extraordinary times to be involved in journalism," said Mr. Rabinovitch. "With media organizations around the world facing constant technological change, the journalist's job has never been more challenging and exciting. The Donaldson Scholarship offers students an opportunity to experience first-hand the dynamic, creative environment at CBC News and the world of leading-edge journalism."

Past Donaldson Scholars have contributed to CBC TV News programs such as Canada Now, Newsworld Business News and The National. Winners have been able to test their abilities in chase production, field production and TV news writing. Many have earned permanent jobs as CBC journalists - on camera and behind-the-scenes.

CBC News offers this scholarship in honour of Joan Donaldson, the founding Head of Newsworld and one of the CBC's journalistic leaders. Throughout her distinguished career, Joan Donaldson helped talented young Canadians realize their journalistic potential in CBC newsrooms and the classrooms of Ryerson and The University of Western Ontario. The CBC Newsworld Joan Donaldson Scholarship continues her mission.
