CBC Wins Emmy

OTTAWA – The CBC has won its second technical Emmy from the National Academy of Televison Arts and Sciences in the United States.

For its pioneering efforts in the "First Full-Time Distribution of TV Network by Satellite Transmission," CBC was singled out from among all other broadcasting organizations. In acknowledging this achievement, the Academy lauded its ground-breaking nature and the initiative displayed by the CBC and its partner, Telesat Canada, in launching the services on April 1, 1973.

Although most of those responsible for the launching of the distribution system which has just won this Emmy have now retired, the CBC's engineering and television media technical staff are to be congratulated on maintaining and extending our use of satellite transmission facilities. CBC President and CEO ad interim, James McCoubrey, noted: "It's hard to believe that CBC has been distributing its television services by satellite for nearly 30 years." "Through the intelligence and foresight of our predecessors, the CBC, as Canada's national public broadcaster, has been able to extend its reach to 99% of the citizens of the world's second largest country," he added.

The award was presented at a special ceremony in New York City on October 11, 1999.
