New Property Division Launched at CBC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa — CBC President and CEO Robert Rabinovitch today announced the creation of a new Property Management Division for the Corporation as a major step in improving the efficient management of all of CBC's operations. The Division will be created as a result of recommendations of the CBC's Re-engineering Task Force and will be lead by a president reporting directly to Senior Management.

"I'm very pleased that we've moved so quickly to achieve this important Task Force objective", said Mr. Rabinovitch. "CBC currently owns 27 buildings and leases another 26. These 53 properties represent about 7.5 million square feet of business space across the country. By managing the facilities, the space and the assets more efficiently including maximizing revenues through selling or renting surplus space, we will be able to redirect funds into programming, which is our overriding objective."

The CBC's Re-engineering Task Force began a review of CBC's management of its properties last December. It found inconsistent space standards, and an inadequate structure and systems required for a business view of real estate.

"Because property management is not a core function of the broadcaster, space has always been regarded as a free good, and it has never been a top priority at any level at the CBC." said Mr. Rabinovitch. "That will change with the creation of this new division. I expect it to develop a framework for space economy, act as landlord for the properties, and implement industry best practices, in addition to overseeing the day-to-day management of the facilities themselves. As a result, our programmers and presenters will be able to concentrate on their core functions — bringing high quality Canadian programs to Canadians."

All CBC employees currently employed in the property management area will be integrated into the new division, which will become operational when the Division President is hired, expected within the next few months.
