Three CBC/Radio-Canada Recordings Win JUNO Awards

Ottawa — CBC/Radio-Canada reached a milestone with three of its recordings winning JUNO Awards this past weekend in Winnipeg. The three wins mean that CBC Records/Les disques Radio-Canada has garnered 25 JUNOs since 1984.

"The JUNO Awards recognize the best in Canadian musical talent and CBC/Radio-Canada is proud of the role its Merchandising Division plays in supporting and promoting established and emerging Canadian artists through its record label, CBC Records/Les disques Radio-Canada," said René Bourdages, President, CBC/Radio-Canada's Merchandising Division. "CBC Records/Les disques Radio-Canada is one of the premier suppliers to Canadians of albums featuring some of the country's finest musicians across all genres."

CBC/Radio-Canada recordings picked up an award in the category of Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble or Soloist(s) with Large Ensemble Accompaniment. This was presented to Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, under the direction of violinist Jeanne Lamon, for the CD Dardanus/Le temple de la gloire: Music of Jean-Philippe Rameau. The CD was also nominated earlier in the year for a Grammy Award.

The JUNO for Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral Performance went to opera singer Isabel Bayrakdarian for her collection of Baroque arias on the CD compilation, Cleopatra.

The World Music Album of the Year went to guitarists, Mighty Popo, Madagascar Slim, Donné Robert, Alpha YaYa Diallo, Adam Solomon and Pa Joe for the CD, African Guitar Summit.

As Canadians' tastes and interests have evolved, the Merchandising Division has expanded its catalogue beyond classical music to embrace jazz, world, traditional and alternative rock releases. While CBC/Radio-Canada recordings have led the classical music industry in regional and national nominations and awards, this past weekend's win in the world music category demonstrates a broadening excellence in music production. In making the best music available to Canadians, CBC/Radio-Canada is becoming one of the most recognized and respected record labels in the country.
