CBC Records/Les disques SRC Wins Big at the Western Canadian Music Awards Held Sunday, October 23 in Vancouver

Ottawa - The diverse repertoire of the CBC Records/Les disques SRC label was showcased Sunday evening in Vancouver as classical and jazz recordings each took home prizes at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra's CD, Frenergy: The Music of John Estacio, with Mario Bernardi conducting, won the award for Outstanding Classical Recording, while the Outstanding Jazz Recording went to the Ryga/Rosnes Quartet for their recording, Deep Cove.

"The CBC Records/Les disques SRC label is dedicated to making the music of Canadian artists and composers available to audiences around the world," says General Manager Randy Barnard. "The label, which is part of the CBC Merchandising Division, has 25 Juno awards to its credit, and this year, received its first Grammy Award nomination - further highlighting the quality of the recordings."

One of the pieces on the Frenergy CD, John Estacio's A Farmer's Symphony, was also nominated separately, in the category of Outstanding Classical Composition. Earlier this year, the CD as a whole garnered two Juno nominations.

On the jazz side, the award for Deep Cove represents a joining together of some of the finest musicians to ever come from Canada's west coast. They include pianist extraordinaire Renee Rosnes, alto and soprano saxophone great Campbell Ryga, bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Rudy Petschauer. Deep Cove also received a Juno nomination.
