Galaxie Celebrates Canadian Music Week 2006

Ottawa - Galaxie, CBC/Radio-Canada's Continuous Music Network, which now reaches more than 5 million households, celebrates new and emerging Canadian artists by helping to present the Xtreme Band Slam and the Indie Awards at Canadian Music Week 2006.

Based solely on artistic merit and not sales or airplay, Elliott Brood, the winner of Galaxie's Rising Stars Award was selected by the nation's music critics and presented at last night's Indie Awards in Toronto. The winner of the Xtreme Band Slam, "the search for Canada's hottest unsigned band" will be announced Friday.

"Galaxie, a division of CBC/Radio-Canada, has an important role to play in supporting and celebrating new Canadian talent," said Michel Tremblay, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for CBC/Radio-Canada. "Partnering with Canadian Music Week is just one more way for us to help provide Canadian artists with the platform and support they so richly deserve."

Galaxie provides important funds to emerging Canadian talent. Since its inception, Galaxie has provided cash awards to over 450 artists and has contributed more than $2.5 million to Canadian talent development through its Rising Stars Program, an initiative that supports more than 50 Canadian music industry events and associations each year.

Launched in 1997 with the objective of delivering Canada's best and most diverse music programming to the widest possible audience, Galaxie recently exceeded the five million subscriber mark. This demonstrates the enormous appetite in Canada for a range of musical genres, from jazz and classical, to world music, hip hop and country. Galaxie continues to expose audiences to existing and emerging artists from across Canada and around the world.
