Competition Bureau
How can we as consumers protect ourselves?
Shop around. You never know if you're getting a deal unless you check out all the options. Even if a sign says "sale", you should ask questions. The sales staff should be able to tell you what the regular price was compared to the one on the price tag.
Also, take your time. Don't get sucked in by high-pressure sales. And if you see something that looks fishy, report it to the Competition Bureau: online or by phoning 1-800-348-5358.
Nissan recall
Nissan is recalling almost 100,000 Sentras and Altimas sold in North America — 6,000 of them in Canada — after reports of excessive oil consumption and engine fires.
The issue affects 2006 models with 2.5-litre engines built between January and May.
Letters are going out to owners of the cars, and Nissan is saying it is still trying figure out why the problem is occurring.
Nissan recommends drivers of affected vehicles keep an eye on their oil levels, checking them every 1,100 kilometres or every other time they fill the tank. If the engine's oil level is kept at a proper level, officials said no damage should occur.
To find out if your car is affected, call Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or call your local Nissan dealer.
