George C.B. Smith

Senior Vice-President, Human Resources and Organization

George Smith obtained his Masters of Industrial Relations degree in the first graduating class of the Centre for Industrial Relations in 1977. He was also the recipient of the first Morley Gunderson Prize in Industrial Relations in 1998.

Since July 1996, George has been the Senior Vice-President, Human Resources and Organization at CBC/Radio-Canada. The early stages of George's career were spent in the Canadian transportation industry, most notably as Vice President, Industrial Relations with the CP Rail System and Senior Director of Employee Relations at Air Canada.

Throughout his career, George has consistently supported the study of industrial relations at Canadian universities. He has developed and delivered numerous classes and seminars on labour relations and collective bargaining. George has presented at such institutions as Concordia University, Queen’s University, University of Toronto and McGill University.

The University of Toronto’s Centre for Industrial Relations is grateful for all the support George provided to the CP Rail Scholarship at the Centre, for his participation as a speaker at various Centre events, and for his role in the training video, The Collective Bargaining Process.
