The Somalia Affair Canadian peacemakers journeyed to Somalia with a mission to bring stability to
a war-torn region. But the mission’s achievements were overshadowed by evidence of racism, brutality, and murder amongst the soldiers and a failure of leadership that stretched from the field to Ottawa. In these activities, students explore the events surrounding Canada’s involvement in Somalia and compare the dates to events in their own lives, write a letter in role as a soldier in Somalia to family in Canada, hold a forum highlighting a variety of points of view on the Somalia affair, write positions on whether or not Canadian soldiers should be held to a higher standard than people in other professions, and produce a news magazine-style program about peacemaking challenges in the 1990s.
