Gouzenko defection exposes Soviet spy ring

 

On Sept. 5, 1945, just after the end of the Second World War, a Russian clerk named Igor Gouzenko fled the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa and defected to Canada. He brought with him 109 documents proving the Soviets were spying on Canada and the West. That revelation sparked a media sensation and — according to some — was the first shot of the Cold War.
